Cory Doctorow: on Boing Boing : Mac guru and software developer Mark Pilgrim recently switched to Ubuntu Linux after becoming fed up with proprietary Mac file-formats and the increasing use of DRM technologies in the MacOS. True to his reputation, Mark says Ubuntu is an ancient African word meaning âcanât install Debianâ?.
See here his list of add-on’s (including his firefox extensions). Sample:
- digiKam + Kipi plugins. Itâs just like iPhoto except it calls albums âtagsâ?, exports to Flickr for free, exports to HTML that validates, stores my important metadata in a SQLite database, can be operated entirely with a keyboard, and doesnât suck;
- k9copy. Itâs MacTheRipper and DVD2OneX all wrapped into one. Really;
- MPlayer (and MEncoder). Compiled from source, yo. Itâs the only thing Iâve felt the need to recompile, or indeed compile in the first place. Because a major new release came out about a week after Dapper shipped, and I wanted to try it. Also, I wanted support for more video codecs than the prebuilt binary included
- Free and Open Source Internet TV Platform Democracy TV
and 14 others.
Among the Firefox extensions: NextPlease, NoScript…
And I thought Mark was diving in family now…
